Chapter 43 - The Things the Void Threw Back

The void did not only take things.
It returned some.
That was worse.
The breach widened to fifteen feet.
Objects fell out.
A rusted road sign Mason did not recognize.
A typewriter.
A child’s red boot.
A section of train rail stamped 1911.
A smartphone with no manufacturer logo.
Then a car.
It landed upside down on the maintenance platform.
Mason stared.
The model was unmistakable.
A Blackstar Coupe.
Not the burned one from Todd’s yard.
This one was intact.
Its dashboard lit.
[OBJECT ORIGIN: UNRESOLVED]
[AGE: CONFLICTING]
[INTENT: GET OUT]
Vale whispered, “Cross-loss.”
“What?”
“Things erased by previous breaches. They accumulate in null space.”
Mason looked at the growing pile.
“Lost things.”
“Not safely lost.”
Undefined figures crawled from the breach behind them.
Dozens.
Then hundreds.
They moved across the bridge, erasing bolts, paint, signs, formation lines.
Mason’s radio exploded with voices.
Tessa: “We have contact on the south span!”
Priya: “Structural readings are becoming nonsense!”
Ward: “Line Zero is collapsing!”
Crowe: “Vale, what did you do?”
Vale closed her eyes.
Then opened them.
“Directorate Protocol Nine. Abandon the relic. Collapse both approaches.”
Mason stared.
“There are crews still on the bridge.”
“They have seven minutes.”
“And the breach?”
“Contained beneath rubble until a national team arrives.”
“You want to bury undefined reality under concrete?”
“It has worked before.”
Mason decided he hated those four words more than almost anything.
He looked at the returned objects.
The red boot.
The old rail.
The strange phone.
Things swallowed by failures nobody had repaired.
The interface opened.
[VOID CACHE DETECTED]
[STATUS: DISCARDED?]
The question mark mattered.
Mason touched the old rail.
History slammed into him.
A station platform.
Steam.
A porter shouting.
Then sudden blankness.
The object had not been abandoned.
It had been taken.
“Return,” Mason whispered.
[DESTINATION UNKNOWN.]
“Then stabilize.”
Nameplate activated.
“Rail. Transit infrastructure. Made in 1911. Used before lost.”
Definition returned.
The steel stopped shedding black frost.
Mason understood the breach differently.
It contained countless stolen definitions.
The void was not empty.
It was full of things no longer connected to where they belonged.
That was a Reclaimer problem.
A massive one.
Vale grabbed his arm.
“Do not attempt to reclaim the breach.”
“I can’t.”
“Good.”
“I can repair the route through it.”
Her face changed.
“Mason.”
“Line Zero was designed to vent crossing pressure.”
Ward’s voice came through the radio.
He had heard.
“No.”
“Everybody says that before the fun part.”
“This is not a joke. You cannot enter null space at Furnace Heart.”
“Can the train?”
Silence.
Mara answered from Carter Terminal.
“Line Zero was built for exactly that.”
Ward cursed.
Mason smiled.
The hidden transit train appeared on the spiritual route map.
Three nodes active.
Four dormant.
The breach sat between them like a broken switch.
If they connected all seven nodes, Line Zero could cross the null zone and reopen the original pressure route.
But the remaining nodes had to be restored simultaneously.
Mason radioed Second Shift.
“Tessa, take River Freight.”
“Already moving.”
“Priya, Municipal Archive.”
“Normal people are evacuating.”
“Perfect. Less explaining.”
“Logan?”
His voice answered.
“Stadium foundation. I know.”
“Crowe?”
A pause.
“South Tunnel.”
Mason looked at Vale.
She stared at him.
“You are assigning the former Foundry chairman like an employee.”
“He’s hourly tonight.”
Crowe’s voice came through.
“I heard that.”
“Clock in.”
Even Vale laughed once.
Then the bridge shook violently.
Six minutes until Directorate demolition.
Mason climbed onto the intact Blackstar that had fallen out of the void.
Its engine started.
The system chimed.
[RECLAIMER VEHICLE CONTRACT OFFERED]
[OBJECT REQUEST: TAKE ME HOME.]
Mason gripped the wheel.
“Me too.”
