Chapter 44 - Seven Nodes

Second Shift became a citywide repair crew in six minutes.

No training exercise could have prepared them.

Fortunately, none of them had attended training exercises.

Tessa reached River Freight Terminal first.

The node was buried beneath a container yard and guarded by void silhouettes climbing through steel like smoke.

She sent Mason one message.

FOUND IT. UGLY.

Then:

CHARGING OVERTIME.

Priya entered the Municipal Archive with Councilwoman Harper and two extremely confused building engineers.

Her node was hidden behind a wall installed during a 1963 renovation.

She refused to let cultivators smash through it.

“Historic masonry,” she said over radio. “We have standards.”

Logan reached the old stadium foundation beneath a parking complex.

He encountered Jace Mercer there.

Jace demanded to know why Logan was helping “the scrapyard guy.”

Logan replied, “Because the scrapyard guy is currently the only person with a plan.”

Jace objected.

June apparently called him and shouted for three straight minutes.

He stopped objecting.

Crowe reached South Tunnel.

Mara remained at Carter Terminal.

Ward controlled River Furnace.

Six nodes.

Mason had Marrow Bridge.

Seven.

The system displayed a city map.

[LINE ZERO RECONNECTION EVENT]

NODE 1: RIVER FURNACE — READY

NODE 2: CARTER TERMINAL — READY

NODE 3: WEST BELT — READY

NODE 4: NORTH WATER — READY

NODE 5: RIVER FREIGHT — CONTESTED

NODE 6: MUNICIPAL ARCHIVE — LOCKED

NODE 7: SOUTH TUNNEL — DAMAGED

Mason blinked.

“That’s more than seven.”

Mara answered, “West Belt and North Water are intermediates. Stop counting and drive.”

The Blackstar accelerated across a bridge lane that no longer fully existed.

Gold route lines formed under the tires.

The car did not fall because spiritually, it was still crossing.

Mason had never experienced a more literal interpretation of faith in public infrastructure.

Directorate demolition timer: four minutes.

Vale followed him on a platform of condemnation qi.

“Call off Protocol Nine!” Mason shouted.

“I no longer control it.”

“Who does?”

“National command.”

“Can Logan sue them?”

“Probably.”

“Good.”

At River Freight, Tessa activated her node.

[READY]

At Municipal Archive, Priya finally reached hers.

“It’s embedded in an original records vault,” she said.

“Can you repair it?”

“No.”

Mason’s stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“It isn’t broken.”

“Then what?”

“Someone intentionally removed the route inscription.”

Mara went silent.

Ward cursed.

Vale whispered, “Directorate.”

The node had been disabled by policy, not failure.

Reclaimer repair rights did not apply.

Mason looked at the system.

[OBJECT FUNCTION REMOVED BY OWNER DECISION]

[NOT ABANDONED.]

Priya said, “I can recreate the missing inscription physically if someone tells me what it looked like.”

Mara answered, “Records were destroyed.”

Mason drove through a wave of void frost.

Furnace Heart burned it away.

He thought of his father’s message.

Line Zero archives.

Maintenance records hidden in routes.

“Mara, did Arthur work the archive building?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Mason opened his father’s transit messages.

Search: ARCHIVE.

One result.

A scanned maintenance sketch.

Arthur Reed had drawn a “weird old plate behind wall, probably useless.”

Mason laughed so hard Vale stared at him.

“My dad documented it because he thought it was stupid.”

He sent the sketch to Priya.

“Can you build that?”

She looked.

“Give me eight minutes.”

“We have three.”

“Then stop talking.”

At South Tunnel, Crowe reported the node physically cracked.

Mason could repair it remotely only if a Reclaimer-linked object was present.

Crowe had nothing.

Then a motorcycle engine echoed through his radio.

The Falcon 900 arrived at South Tunnel by itself.

Mason stared at the map.

The bike had left Second Shift without permission.

[AWAKENED INTENT: 11%]

[REQUEST: USE ME.]

Mason swallowed.

“Good bike.”

The Falcon linked to Crowe’s node.

Mason channeled Repair through the route network.

The bike’s frame glowed.

South Tunnel stabilized.

[READY]

Two minutes.

Priya hammered the final fabricated inscription plate into the Archive node.

“Try it!”

Mason reached through the civic network.

The plate had no history.

No accumulated intent.

It was new.

He could not reclaim what had never served.

So he used Repurpose.

He pulled route memory from his father’s old maintenance sketch.

Not the paper.

The intent behind it.

ARTHUR REED: NOTICE EVERYTHING.

Transferred into the new plate.

The Archive node ignited.

[READY]

All nodes connected.

Line Zero lit beneath the city.

Demolition timer: forty-one seconds.

Mason opened the hidden train route.

The maintenance consist appeared on Marrow Bridge where no tracks existed.

Its door opened.

Mara’s voice came over radio.

“Once you enter the breach, communication ends.”

Tessa shouted, “Mason, wait for us!”

He looked at the void split widening beneath the bridge.

No time.

Vale stepped toward the train.

“I’m coming.”

Mason looked at her.

“You tried to condemn me ten minutes ago.”

“And now I am updating my risk model.”

He smiled.

“That apology sounds familiar.”

They boarded.

The train entered the breach as the demolition countdown reached zero.

Behind them, nothing exploded.

Logan had apparently found a judge.

Mason laughed.

Then the city disappeared.
