Chapter 42 - Cora Vale’s Better City

Cora Vale believed she was saving Detroit.

That was the irritating part.

Villains were easier when they enjoyed being wrong.

Mason met her inside the bridge’s north anchorage while emergency crews evacuated the remaining structure.

Void frost crawled across the walls.

Vale stood beside the main seal plate, perfectly calm.

“You rescued a bus,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Twenty-three people.”

“Twenty-four including the driver.”

“Do you know how many people cross this bridge in a year?”

Mason did not answer.

“Eleven million.”

Vale touched the ancient formation.

“The original network is failing. Not today. Not because of me. Because cities change faster than civic spirits can adapt.”

“You accelerated the failure.”

“To control where it happens.”

“Same sentence with better public relations.”

Her eyes hardened.

“Your path romanticizes maintenance.”

“I’m a mechanic. Occupational hazard.”

“I have watched cities pour billions into obsolete systems because people cannot accept endings.”

“And I’ve watched people replace a twenty-dollar sensor with a six-thousand-dollar assembly because nobody bothered diagnosing it.”

Vale almost smiled.

“Scale matters.”

“So does motive.”

She showed him a projection.

Directorate plan.

Three controlled civic anchors would replace seven older nodes.

Downtown core.

Medical district.

Freight corridor.

Everything outside those zones would be allowed to “fade naturally.”

Mason stared at the map.

Old River was gray.

West Belt gray.

Half the neighborhoods Ward had marked were gray.

“You’re not saving the city.”

“I am preserving the parts that can sustain themselves.”

“By deciding the rest are waste.”

Vale’s voice became cold.

“Resources are finite.”

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The lie.”

Mason stepped closer.

“You think maintenance is sentimental because you only count cost when poor people need something fixed.”

Condemnation qi filled the chamber.

Vale’s Furnace Heart dwarfed his.

She could erase his authority here.

She could probably kill him.

Mason felt fear.

He kept talking.

“My dad repaired buses. Nobody called it sacred. Nobody wrote cultivation manuals about it. But if he didn’t show up, people didn’t get to work.”

Vale’s pressure increased.

“You confuse service with strategic value.”

“No. You confuse expensive with necessary.”

The bridge shuddered.

A voice entered Mason’s interface.

Not words exactly.

Intent.

CROSS.

RETURN.

HOLD.

Mason looked at Vale.

“The bridge doesn’t consent.”

“It is infrastructure.”

“It can answer.”

“That does not make it competent to choose.”

Mason laughed once.

“And there’s the second lie.”

Vale attacked.

Condemnation struck his Furnace Heart.

[HOSTILE JUDGMENT]

MASON REED — UNQUALIFIED / TEMPORARY / ACCIDENTAL CULTIVATOR

It hurt because parts were true.

He was new.

He was undertrained.

He had stumbled into power through a burned car.

Vale’s authority amplified every insecurity.

Mason nearly dropped.

Then he remembered Mrs. Alvarez.

Return to Sender required the true owner to refuse.

He looked at the judgment.

“Unqualified?”

Maybe.

“Temporary?”

No.

“Accidental?”

The system had found him by chance.

Everything after that had been choice.

Mason straightened.

“Rejected.”

Return to Sender activated.

Vale’s own condemnation snapped back across the chamber.

Her eyes widened.

Mason’s Furnace Heart burned the residue.

[REFINEMENT COMPLETE]

[AUTHORITY RESISTANCE INCREASED]

Vale stepped backward for the first time.

Then alarms screamed.

Internal seal condition reached 0%.

Both of them froze.

The river beneath Marrow Bridge opened.

Not physically.

A black vertical line appeared in midair between the support piers.

Reality split like fabric.

Something on the other side pulled.

The bridge groaned.

Cars, tools, loose steel, and even sound began sliding toward the breach.

Vale stared.

“This is too early.”

Mason looked at her.

“You broke it.”

For the first time, Cora Vale looked afraid.

“No,” she whispered.

“Something broke it from the other side.”
