Chapter 22 - The Harvest Begins

At exactly six, Silas Crowe raised one hand.
The city block screamed.
Mason had no better word for it.
Streetlights flickered. Windows rattled. Rusted beams groaned beneath empty warehouses. The pavement itself seemed to exhale as red lines ignited beneath the roads.
The Council’s harvesting formation activated.
[HOSTILE URBAN ARRAY ONLINE]
[FUNCTION: EXTRACT RESIDUAL HUMAN INTENT]
[TARGET: OLD RIVER DISTRICT]
[PROJECTED RESULT: SPIRITUAL NULL ZONE]
Mason stood inside River Furnace with both hands on the control plate.
Twelve community anchors burned gold around the district.
The Rook was parked directly above the furnace chamber, connected by a ridiculous length of copper grounding cable Tessa had insisted was “either genius or a fire code confession.”
Resonance held at 28%.
Then the red formation pulled.
Mason felt the bakery oven strain.
The bus shelter.
The gym bell.
Every shared memory attached to every object stretched toward the extraction lines.
“Brace!” Ward shouted.
Mason activated Reclaimer’s Brace.
The district’s discarded objects answered.
Not just their twelve anchors.
Everything abandoned within the circle.
Broken signs.
Old cars.
Empty factories.
Demolished stair rails.
Discarded furniture in alleys.
Thousands of forgotten things poured Scrap Qi into him.
His Iron Sinew realm overloaded immediately.
[QI CAPACITY: 31/31]
[OVERFLOW: 84]
[OVERFLOW: 146]
Mason’s muscles felt like cables about to snap.
Tessa stood at a secondary control pillar routing qi away from him.
“This is too much!”
“Useful observation!”
“You need a larger core!”
“I don’t have one!”
“Then grow one!”
“That feels like a multi-day task!”
Ward slammed his cane against the floor.
“Stop treating the qi like yours.”
Mason looked at him.
“What?”
“You’re a Reclaimer. You keep trying to store what should be returned.”
The words hit harder than Jace Mercer ever had.
Mason understood.
He was acting like a normal cultivator.
Take qi.
Store qi.
Make self stronger.
Wrong path.
He closed his eyes.
Then opened the Reclaimer Interface over the entire district.
Every anchor appeared.
Every object.
Every connection.
RETURN.
Instead of pulling Scrap Qi into himself, Mason redirected it.
The bakery oven fed the bakery building.
The gym bell fed the gym.
The bus shelter fed the transit corridor.
The Rook fed the roads it had traveled.
Energy moved outward.
Not possession.
Ownership restored.
The district’s resonance surged.
31%.
38%.
47%.
Outside, Silas Crowe’s smile disappeared.
The hostile extraction formation began to fail.
Red lines flickered.
Mason laughed.
Tessa stared at the map.
“You reversed it.”
“No.”
He felt every street humming beneath his hands.
“I gave it back.”
The system exploded with notifications.
[MAJOR PATH INSIGHT]
[RECLAIMER AUTHORITY EVOLUTION]
RETURN — LOW AUTHORITY -> TRUE AUTHORITY
[IRON SINEW BREAKTHROUGH CONDITIONS MET]
[NEW REALM AVAILABLE: STEEL MERIDIAN]
Mason barely had time to smile.
Silas Crowe stepped through the foundry wall.
Not the door.
The wall.
Concrete and brick parted around him like curtains.
Tessa froze.
Ward whispered, “Earth authority.”
Crowe looked at Mason.
“You are inconvenient.”
Mason’s knees shook under the pressure of the man’s presence.
“Been hearing that a lot.”
Crowe glanced at the furnace.
“Elias.”
Ward leaned on his cane.
“Silas.”
“You should have died.”
Ward smiled.
“So should Detroit. Yet here we both are.”
Crowe extended one hand toward Mason.
The stone floor opened beneath his feet.
Mason activated the breakthrough.
Steel Meridian began forming while the Council chairman tried to bury him alive.
