Chapter 41 - The Bus on Marrow Bridge

The bridge closure came ninety seconds too late.

A city bus was still halfway across when the first void fracture opened.

Mason saw it on the traffic feed.

Route 18.

Twenty-three passengers.

Driver trying to reverse through stopped cars.

Behind the bus, the roadway had become wrong.

Not broken.

Wrong.

Lane markings ended in blank gray pavement. Guardrails faded into smooth shapes. A truck at the fracture edge had lost its rear half without debris, as if reality had stopped describing it.

Mason grabbed the Falcon keys.

Priya caught his sleeve.

“You cannot ride onto a closed bridge during structural instability.”

“I’m a contractor.”

“That sentence does not solve physics.”

“It solves cones.”

Tessa was already putting on her work jacket.

“I’m coming.”

Ward shook his head.

“You need the furnace team here.”

Mason looked at Tessa.

She hated it.

Then nodded.

“Bring the bus back.”

The Falcon 900 started before Mason touched the ignition.

[ROUTE INTENT: EMERGENCY CROSSING]

He rode through police barricades with Logan’s forged infrastructure badge clipped to his jacket.

A state trooper shouted.

Mason pointed at the contractor logo and kept moving.

The system commented:

[LEGAL STATUS: AMBIGUOUS.]

“Story of my life.”

Wind hammered the bridge.

The river below churned black beneath a clear sky.

Civic relic stats flashed constantly.

[MARROW BRIDGE]

INTERNAL SEAL: 5%

VOID PRESSURE: CRITICAL

AWAKENING: 71%

Mason reached the bus.

The driver had gotten everyone off and moved them forward toward the far side, but an elderly passenger using a walker could not move quickly enough. The fracture was spreading behind them.

The driver shouted, “Who are you?”

“Repair guy.”

“Repair what?”

Mason looked at reality dissolving across the road.

“Still figuring that out.”

He touched the bus.

[2016 CITY TRANSIT BUS]

[CONDITION: 68%]

[PRIMARY INTENT: FINISH THE ROUTE]

Of course.

The bus did not need repairing.

The route did.

Mason used Nameplate.

“Route Eighteen. Eastbound. Marrow Crossing.”

Gold lines formed beneath the bus tires.

The void fracture recoiled by inches.

Mason understood.

The civic network still recognized the route.

He could reinforce it.

“Everybody back on the bus!”

The driver stared.

“The road is disappearing.”

“I know.”

“You want me to drive toward it?”

“Actually away from it.”

“That part I like.”

The passengers climbed aboard.

Mason attached the Falcon to the rear maintenance tow point with a chain.

The driver leaned out the window.

“That motorcycle is not pulling a forty-thousand-pound bus.”

“No.”

Mason placed one hand on the bus, one on the Falcon.

“But the route might.”

He activated Reclaimer’s Brace at civic scale.

His new Furnace Heart burned void corrosion as fast as it touched the route definition.

Gold lines extended toward the far end of the bridge.

GET HOME.

FINISH THE ROUTE.

CROSS.

The bus engine roared.

The driver hit the accelerator.

The bridge shifted beneath them.

Steel groaned.

Void pressure erased thirty feet of guardrail on the north side.

Mason rode beside the bus, Furnace Heart burning like a welding torch inside his chest.

Definition loss hit his left arm.

He used Nameplate on himself.

“Mason Reed. Twenty-eight. Bad credit. Good tools.”

The system added:

[QUESTIONABLE DIET.]

“Not helping.”

His arm stabilized.

The passengers reached the far barricade.

The driver stopped only after all four tires were on normal pavement.

People poured out.

The elderly passenger grabbed Mason’s hand.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

Then Marrow Bridge made a sound like a ship breaking in half.

Everyone turned.

One of the Council-installed control towers rose from beneath the center span.

Cora Vale stood on top of it.

Red-black condemnation qi spread across the bridge.

Mason’s interface flashed.

[HOSTILE DECLARATION]

MARROW BRIDGE — OBSOLETE.

The bridge’s civic spirit answered.

[REJECTION.]

Vale smiled.

Then she drove her authority downward.

The bridge’s internal seal dropped to 2%.

Mason realized she was not trying to save it anymore.

She was forcing the breach.
