Chapter 15 - Repairing What Money Couldn’t

Evelyn Mercer could buy almost anything.

That was the problem.

Her granddaughter had been born with a rare meridian disorder that caused qi to attack the nerves in one leg. Modern medicine had saved her life. Cultivator medicine had saved the limb for several years.

Neither had saved function.

“She is twelve,” Evelyn said.

Mason turned the prosthetic over in his hands.

“Why this one?”

“She wore it from age seven to ten. Refuses to let us throw it away.”

Logan leaned against the bench.

“We have bought her better devices.”

“Four,” Evelyn said. “Two were crafted by sect artificers. She says none of them feel like hers.”

The interface highlighted layers of residual intent.

Thousands of footsteps.

Falls.

Running attempts.

A bicycle pedal.

Soccer practice.

Stairs.

A child’s determination imprinted so deeply into carbon fiber that Mason could almost feel it moving.

“This isn’t broken in the normal way,” he said.

Evelyn’s eyes sharpened.

“Explain.”

“The material’s damaged, yes. But the intent is intact.”

Tessa understood first.

“You could reclaim the intent and transfer it.”

Mason nodded slowly.

The system opened an advanced function.

[PATH ABILITY AVAILABLE]

REPURPOSE — Transfer compatible residual intent from a reclaimed object into a repaired successor.

[COST: 24 SCRAP QI]

Mason had thirty-one.

He spent five hours.

He refused Mercer tools.

Used the Reclaimer workshop instead.

He fabricated a new titanium joint, repaired the carbon socket, replaced worn components, and preserved the parts the girl had touched most.

Then he transferred the intent.

RUN.

The workshop lights dimmed.

Golden threads moved from old material into new.

The prosthetic trembled.

[REPURPOSE SUCCESSFUL]

[OBJECT EVOLUTION]

RUNNER’S LEG — LOW RELIC GRADE

[ABILITY: ADAPTIVE QI DAMPING]

Mason stared.

He had not intended to make a relic.

The system commented.

[GOOD REPAIRS OCCASIONALLY BECOME MORE THAN REPAIRS.]

Evelyn said nothing for several seconds.

Then she took the leg carefully.

“What do you want?”

Mason looked up.

“For repairing it?”

“Yes.”

“Nothing.”

Logan laughed.

Evelyn did not.

“Nobody wants nothing.”

“It belongs to a kid.”

“That does not answer me.”

Mason set down his wrench.

“Then call it rent for the furnace until we figure out who actually owns the land.”

Tessa smiled.

Logan looked surprised.

Evelyn studied Mason.

Then she nodded once.

“Accepted.”

She left with the prosthetic.

The Mercer cultivators followed.

Logan remained.

“You had leverage.”

“So?”

“You gave it away.”

“No. I spent it where I wanted.”

Logan’s expression became thoughtful.

After he left, Tessa sat on the workbench.

“You know that was politically stupid.”

“Probably.”

“Also strategically useful.”

“Less probably?”

“Evelyn Mercer now owes you emotionally, which is more dangerous than money.”

The system chimed.

[PATH INSIGHT]

VALUE IS NOT PRICE.

OWNERSHIP IS NOT POSSESSION.

REPAIR IS NOT RETURNING A THING TO WHAT IT WAS.

[RECLAIMER AUTHORITY INCREASED]

Then another message appeared.

[HIDDEN FUNCTION UNLOCKED]

LIVING RECLAMATION — RESTRICTED

Mason’s smile vanished.

“What does living reclamation mean?”

The system did not answer.

Instead, it displayed a map.

A red marker pulsed over an abandoned hospital on Detroit’s east side.

[DISCARDED HUMAN FATE DETECTED]
