Chapter 4 - The Toaster That Made Him Faster

The next morning, Mason discovered immortality had a garbage problem.

His apartment building’s trash room glowed.

Not metaphorically.

Actual faint gold lines hovered over half the junk piled beside the dumpster.

[ABANDONED OBJECT]

[ABANDONED OBJECT]

[ABANDONED OBJECT]

Mason stood there holding a gas-station breakfast sandwich.

“This is either the greatest thing that has ever happened to me or a very specific brain tumor.”

The system highlighted a broken toaster.

[TOASTER — CONDITION: 12%]

[AVAILABLE TRAITS: TIMING / HEAT RESISTANCE / SPRING RESPONSE]

A cracked office chair offered BALANCE.

A dead vacuum cleaner offered SUCTION CONTROL, which Mason declined to investigate on principle.

A child’s discarded bicycle offered PEDAL ENDURANCE.

Mason began to understand the rule.

Broken objects held residue from what they had done repeatedly.

Use created intent.

Intent created traits.

But he could not simply take them.

[RECLAMATION REQUIRES REPAIR OR COMPLETION.]

He fixed the toaster first.

It took twenty minutes.

He selected TIMING.

A pulse of Scrap Qi entered his chest.

[TRAIT ACQUIRED: PRECISE TIMING I]

[REACTION +2]

A new stat appeared.

He repaired the bicycle chain and gained ENDURANCE +1.

Then the system stopped him.

[TRAIT SLOTS FULL: 3/3]

“Already?”

[YOUR SOUL CURRENTLY HAS THE STORAGE CAPACITY OF A STUDIO APARTMENT.]

“That feels personal.”

[BREAK THROUGH TO TIN SKIN REALM TO UNLOCK TWO ADDITIONAL SLOTS.]

“How?”

A quest opened.

[TIN SKIN BREAKTHROUGH]

CONDITIONS:

- REPAIR 10 ABANDONED OBJECTS

- CIRCULATE 100 SCRAP QI

- ENDURE IMPACT WITHOUT DROPPING THE OBJECT YOU ARE PROTECTING

Mason stared at the third requirement.

“That sounds suspiciously like getting hit.”

[CORRECT.]

“Can I protect, like, a sandwich?”

[IF YOU VALUE THE SANDWICH.]

He spent the afternoon repairing junk people had thrown away.

A lamp.

A box fan.

Two stools.

A cracked snow shovel.

He listed the fixed items online.

By six, he had made one hundred and eighty dollars.

More than he usually cleared in two shifts after deductions.

That should have been the best part of his day.

It wasn’t.

A woman named Mrs. Vega came downstairs carrying an old portable heater.

“You fix things now?”

“Apparently.”

“My husband bought this before he died. I know it’s stupid, but—”

“It’s not stupid.”

Mason repaired the burnt thermal fuse.

When the heater turned on, Mrs. Vega smiled so suddenly that Mason had to look away.

The system chimed.

[REPAIR COMPLETED: SENTIMENTAL OBJECT]

[BONUS: +5 SCRAP QI]

[NOTE: VALUE IS NOT THE SAME AS PRICE.]

Mason stared at the heater.

For the first time, the system felt less like a cheat code and more like a philosophy.

Then somebody knocked on the trash-room door.

Brent from the scrapyard stood there with two men Mason had never seen.

Brent smiled.

“Todd says you stole something last night.”

Mason looked at the heater in his hands.

The breakthrough condition flashed.

ENDURE IMPACT WITHOUT DROPPING THE OBJECT YOU ARE PROTECTING.

Mason sighed.

“Mrs. Vega, could you step back?”

Brent cracked his knuckles.

The system added:

[OPTIONAL BONUS: DO NOT LET THE HEATER TOUCH THE FLOOR.]

Mason looked at the three men.

Then at the heater.

“Of course there’s a bonus.”
