Chapter 13 - They Burned a Folding Table

The fire department arrived before Eli.
There was not much to save.
The folding table had become black metal legs around ash. The camping stove was ruined. Someone had spray-painted a message on the alley wall.
STOP COOKING.
Reggie stared at the remains.
"I paid twenty bucks for that table."
Owen looked at him.
"That's your reaction?"
"It had adjustable height."
Eli expected anger.
Instead he felt tired.
The system chimed.
[Property destroyed: estimated value $41.]
[Emotional damage: dramatically higher.]
A crowd had gathered.
People from the bridge. Nurses who bought lunch. Delivery drivers. The nursing student. Even the cashier who had given Eli stale bread.
Mrs. Alvarez showed up carrying a crockpot.
"You need table?"
"Someone burned it."
"I see fire, Eli. I am old, not blind."
She pointed to the sidewalk.
Three folding tables appeared from neighbors.
Then five.
Someone brought propane.
Someone else brought rice.
Reggie opened his garage and produced a grill so large it probably violated treaties.
The system began flashing.
[Community contribution recognized.]
[Potential Hearth Node detected.]
Eli froze.
"Wait."
Madam Sato understood before he finished.
"A Hearth does not require one cook."
The Ten-Thousand Bowl Method had never said it did.
Eli had assumed nodes meant kitchens controlled by him.
That was the old centralized thinking in miniature.
He lit Hearth Flame beneath Mrs. Alvarez's pot.
She added beans.
Reggie grilled chicken.
Tasha arrived with bread.
People cooked what they knew.
Nobody charged anyone.
Nobody asked who deserved a plate.
At 7:22 p.m., golden light settled invisibly over the alley.
[Distributed Hearth Node established.]
[Node 1/10,000]
[Contributors: 46]
[Primary fuel: mutual aid]
Eli laughed.
One node in an evening.
Still impossible.
But less impossible than yesterday.
A food blogger filmed the rebuild. The video spread overnight under the title SOMEONE BURNED THIS GUY'S FOOD STAND SO THE WHOLE BLOCK OPENED A RESTAURANT.
By morning it had 1.8 million views.
Eli's phone filled with messages from churches, restaurants, food trucks, school PTAs, community centers, and one extremely aggressive knitting club asking how to join.
[SYSTEM UPDATE]
[Potential Hearth partners detected: 2,314]
Eli's heart jumped.
Then another number appeared.
[Warning: Public attention has attracted mundane authorities.]
A city health inspector walked into the alley holding a clipboard.
Behind her came Grant Mercer with three lawyers.
"Mr. Chen," Grant said pleasantly, "I'm afraid your community kitchen violates seventeen regulations."
The inspector looked apologetic.
"He's right."
The alley went silent.
Grant smiled.
Eli had beaten arson with community.
Now his enemy had discovered something more powerful than spiritual martial arts.
Permits.
