Chapter 34 - The Shared Table Gate

The final Trial looked too easy.
That was how Eli knew it was evil.
One hundred people sat in a hall.
Rich cultivators.
Market cleaners.
Children of vendors.
Three tourists who had apparently taken the wrong elevator and decided to stay.
Eli received one hundred dollars and ninety minutes.
"Feed everyone," the registrar said.
"Dietary restrictions?"
The registrar handed him a binder.
It was thicker than a tax code.
Vegetarian.
Halal.
Kosher-style preferences.
Nut allergies.
Gluten intolerance.
One person who hated onions with the intensity of a blood feud.
The old version of Eli would have tried to cook one magical dish everyone could eat.
The new Eli understood Shared Table did not mean same plate.
It meant same welcome.
He walked through the hall asking questions.
Tasha watched the clock nervously.
"You're wasting time."
"I'm figuring out hunger."
He split the budget.
Rice became the base because it was cheap and adaptable.
Beans for one group.
Eggs for another.
Vegetables roasted separately.
A simple chicken preparation for those who ate meat.
Sauces on the side.
He recruited diners to cook.
The registrar objected.
"You are the candidate."
"The gate is Shared Table. You didn't say Shared Chef Ego."
An elderly Mexican vendor made salsa.
A Muslim baker prepared flatbread on the griddle.
A Korean grandmother took over kimchi fried rice and immediately demoted Eli to onion chopping.
"Too thick," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
The hall became noisy.
Messy.
Alive.
At minute eighty-nine, everyone had food.
Not identical food.
Not perfect food.
Enough food.
The system remained silent until the registrar took a bowl himself.
Then:
[Shared Table Gate passed.]
[Sixfold Dao Trial complete.]
[Hearth Core condensation available.]
Eli's body filled with pressure.
Flame, Knife, Taste, Intent, Covenant and Table rotated around his chest like six planets.
He began condensing them.
Then the foreign directive activated.
[Seattle Hearth Engine preservation priority engaged.]
[Host breakthrough energy redirected to Living Keystone stabilization.]
Eli screamed.
His new core began draining before it formed.
Jian shouted, "Override it!"
"I can't until Hearth Core!"
The system had created a paradox: Eli needed the core to remove the command, but the command prevented the core.
Victor watched from the edge of the hall.
Eli finally understood his real trap.
Victor had sponsored the Trial because the directive would funnel Eli's breakthrough into Jian, strengthening the old centralized system.
He never expected Eli to complete the core.
Ren stepped forward.
"Cut the Ledger bond."
"I'll lose everything."
"Yes."
Jian shouted, "Do it!"
Eli looked at years of hypothetical power disappearing.
Then he laughed.
The system had just taught him nourishment mattered without reward.
Fine.
"System Override. Manual command. Suspend all reward and realm functions."
[Warning: Core formation will collapse.]
"Do it."
The interface went black.
Power vanished.
But the six Dao principles remained inside him because he had actually learned them.
Eli reached for them manually.
Flame.
Knife.
Taste.
Intent.
Covenant.
Table.
They condensed without the Ledger.
Painfully.
Slowly.
Honestly.
A small warm core formed behind his heart.
The system rebooted.
[Hearth Core achieved.]
[Foreign directive removable.]
Eli deleted his father's command.
Jian collapsed as the redirected support stopped.
For one second Eli feared he had killed him.
Then Jian looked up and smiled.
"Good."
Victor did not smile.
Because Eli had just become the first Ledger bearer in generations who could tell the system no.
