Chapter 39 - Grant Stole His Father's Heart

Grant sent Eli a location.

Golden Ox Prime.

The restaurant where everything started.

Eli entered through the back door for the first time since Roland fired him.

The dish pit was exactly as he remembered.

Same sprayer.

Same cracked tile.

Same shelf where people left pans "to soak" until somebody with lower status cleaned them.

Grant waited beside the sinks holding a glowing red crystal.

The Living Hearth Core shard.

"You stole it."

"Yes."

"Why meet here?"

"Because Dad has eyes everywhere except places he considers beneath him."

That was almost poetic.

Grant handed Eli the shard.

No trick.

"Why?"

"Because I'm done being useful."

Grant had spent his life as Victor's heir, manager, negotiator and test instrument. He had defended systems he increasingly hated because he believed he could moderate them from inside.

Luis's death broke that excuse.

The school rollout ended it.

"Dad expects me to challenge him someday," Grant said. "But only after becoming exactly like him."

Eli understood more than expected.

"Families are weird."

"Profound."

They repaired the People's Ladle in the dish pit.

Because cultivation had a sense of humor.

Eli placed the red shard against cracked jade.

Hearth Flame melted neither. Instead it persuaded both to share structure.

Knife Intent trimmed corrupted edges.

Taste Sense detected imbalance.

Covenant Editing created consent channels.

Shared Table linked it to the community network.

The crack vanished.

[Artifact restored: People's Ladle]

[Authority: Distribute manageable Hunger Debt through consenting Hearth nodes.]

[Warning: User must never assign burden without informed consent.]

Eli appreciated the specificity.

Then Golden Ox's front doors locked.

Roland Pike walked into the kitchen.

Behind him came Victor Vale.

Grant's face hardened.

"How?"

Victor looked at the dish cameras.

"I may consider a place beneath me. I do not consider surveillance beneath me."

Roland looked miserable.

Victor extended his hand.

"Give me the Ladle."

Eli said no.

Victor activated his domain.

Every ingredient in Golden Ox responded.

Salt rose from containers.

Wine pulled itself from bottles.

Flames bent toward him.

A restaurant was Victor's natural battlefield.

[Sovereign Appetite Domain — partial]

[Within domain, owner may command registered food covenants.]

Eli's own qi stalled.

Grant stepped between them.

"Then take mine first."

Victor's expression finally changed.

"Move."

"No."

Father and son stared at each other.

Then Roland Pike quietly opened the walk-in refrigerator.

"Back exit," he whispered to Eli.

Eli blinked.

Roland shrugged.

"You were right about the dumplings."

It was not redemption.

But it was a start.

Eli escaped with the Ladle while Grant stayed behind to face Victor.

Outside, the system displayed a new timer.

[Sovereign Domain completion: 11 hours.]

[Maw debt-return window before next containment collapse: 10 hours 43 minutes.]

Two clocks.

One city.

And Eli could not stop both alone.
