Chapter 25 - The Maw Called Me Son

Eli did what any reasonable person would do after an ancient hunger entity called him son.
He ate antacids.
They did not help.
The voice returned whenever he was hungry.
SON.
"Stop."
HUNGRY.
"Make a sandwich."
The Maw did not appreciate sarcasm.
Madam Sato built a meditation ward in the church kitchen. Jian monitored Eli's qi while Mei cooked congee because apparently cosmic horror still required breakfast.
The Hollow connection was not biological.
Probably.
The Maw recognized the Pearl essence in Eli and interpreted shared essence as kinship.
"So I'm spiritually related to a basement mouth," Eli said.
Tasha nodded. "Thanksgiving is going to be weird."
The connection created danger—and information.
When Eli closed his eyes, he could sense the Maw's hunger currents.
He located the third formation point instantly.
Not at the school hub anymore.
It had moved.
"Formations don't move," Sato said.
"This one does."
The third point traveled through the city inside a refrigerated truck carrying NourishNow meals.
Grant checked logistics.
There were forty identical trucks.
Eli listened to the Maw.
HUNGRY.
"Yeah, yeah. Which truck?"
Images hit him.
Cold metal.
Cilantro.
A driver chewing cinnamon gum.
Reggie stared. "Your demon stomach has GPS?"
"Apparently."
They found the truck crossing the West Seattle Bridge.
Owen drove.
Madam Sato stood through the sunroof because she had no respect for traffic safety.
The chase was brief and ridiculous.
Tasha threw a pastry bag full of binding dough onto the truck's rear axle.
The dough expanded like concrete foam.
The truck stopped.
Inside, they found no meals.
Only a portable altar and Elder Cho tied to a chair.
Sato rushed to him.
Cho was alive, barely.
"Victor," he whispered.
Grant stiffened.
"My father kidnapped you?"
Cho shook his head.
"No. He tried to save me."
Everyone went silent.
Cho explained the Ash Pavilion had a new leader.
Not Victor.
Not an exile.
Someone called the Empty Chef.
A cultivator who believed both Hunger taxation and Gratitude networks were forms of dependency.
His goal was not control.
It was severance.
Destroy all Hearth systems.
Let humanity face appetite with no spiritual regulation.
"Who is he?" Eli asked.
Cho looked at Jian.
Jian's face drained.
"No."
Cho whispered the name.
"Master Ren Chen."
Eli blinked.
"Chen?"
Jian sat down.
"My older brother."
Eli's day had started with antacids.
By lunch he had acquired an evil uncle.
Reader engine remained undefeated.
