Chapter 21 - Knife Intent Meets a Subway Turnstile

The first formation point sat beneath an abandoned section of the light-rail system.
The station entrance was chained.
Reggie produced bolt cutters.
Madam Sato produced one finger and sliced the chain in half.
Reggie stared at his cutters.
"I brought emotional support tools."
Below, the station had been transformed.
Black salt lines covered the floor. Old advertising screens showed moving symbols instead of commercials. The air smelled like burnt sugar and empty stomachs.
Eli's Appraisal identified twelve Ash Pavilion cultivators.
Most were stronger than him.
"Plan?" Owen whispered.
Eli looked at the station map.
"They need the formation intact."
He drew his chef's knife.
Tasha blinked. "You're fighting twelve cultivators with a Victorinox?"
"It's a good knife."
[Knife Intent II available through practical application.]
"System agrees."
They did not fight fair.
Owen triggered the station fire suppression system.
Reggie killed emergency lights.
Tasha threw flour into the air so invisible qi threads became visible when dust clung to them.
Madam Sato became a purple-coated blur.
Eli went for the formation lines.
A young Ash cultivator blocked him with a cleaver blackened by Hunger Qi.
"Ledger bearer," the man hissed. "You've fed the weak long enough."
"You sound like a motivational poster for sociopaths."
The cleaver came down.
Eli caught its path with Knife Intent.
He did not become faster than physics.
He became better at reading cuts.
Every blade declared where it wanted to go.
He stepped half an inch aside, sliced the man's sleeve, then cut the black qi cord feeding the weapon.
The cleaver became ordinary steel.
The cultivator stared.
Eli hit him with a subway fire extinguisher.
"Knife skill doesn't mean knife murder."
[SYSTEM APPROVAL: +1]
He reached the central formation mark.
Purifying Flame burned through it.
The whole station groaned.
[Formation Point 1 captured.]
[Network inversion risk reduced: 33%]
Then a hidden chamber opened behind an advertising wall.
Inside were hundreds of glass jars.
Each contained a tiny flame labeled with a restaurant name.
Jade Table.
Golden Ox Prime.
Neighborhood diners.
Food trucks.
Even Mrs. Alvarez's church kitchen.
Madam Sato went pale.
"Hearth Seeds."
Ash Pavilion had been collecting copies of local kitchen resonance for years.
Eli found one jar labeled CHEN FAMILY KITCHEN — CLOSED 7 YEARS.
His father's old restaurant.
Inside the jar, the flame was still alive.
Jian touched the glass.
"They didn't destroy our restaurant because of debt."
Eli looked at him.
Jian's voice hardened.
"They wanted its Hearth Seed."
The family bankruptcy, his father's disappearance, even the shame Eli had carried about failing business—all of it had been engineered.
Then the jar cracked from the inside.
A woman's voice whispered through the flame.
"Jian?"
Eli's father stopped breathing.
Eli knew that voice too.
His mother.
Mei was spiritually connected to the stolen Hearth Seed.
And she was currently home alone.
