Chapter 19 - One Thousand Kitchens

Eli expected the viral internet to save him.
The internet mostly produced questions.
Is this a cult?
Do we get paid?
Can gluten-free people generate spiritual resonance?
What exactly is a Hearth Node and why does your PDF say "do not accept mysterious black seasoning from corporate representatives"?
Tasha built a website.
Reggie made instructional videos.
Dana Ruiz, the health inspector, created a legal checklist after Eli carefully described the project as "a coordinated community meal event with unusual branding."
Churches joined.
Mosques joined.
Temples joined.
Food trucks joined.
A motorcycle club offered chili.
The aggressive knitting club turned out to have a commercial kitchen and sixty-seven grandmothers.
By noon:
[Stable Hearth Nodes: 214/1,000]
Too slow.
The problem was not participation.
It was sincerity.
Some restaurants joined for publicity. Their meals generated weak or zero resonance.
One influencer livestreamed herself handing sandwiches to homeless people while making them sign appearance releases.
[Node rejected.]
[Reason: nourishment secondary to self-promotion.]
"System's savage," Reggie said.
At 2 p.m., Victor's people began offering cash for kitchens to withdraw.
At 3, fake health warnings spread online.
At 4, three participating kitchens received surprise utility shutoffs.
Eli stopped trying to coordinate everything himself.
That was the point.
He gave regional volunteers authority.
"Don't copy my menu," he told them. "Cook what your people actually want."
The numbers accelerated.
[401]
[563]
[701]
At sunset, the city changed.
Eli could feel nodes as warm lights through his Hearth Sense.
A Filipino church serving arroz caldo.
A Somali community center serving rice and goat stew.
A queer youth shelter making grilled cheese.
A Sikh gurdwara serving langar.
A high school soccer team assembling burritos badly but enthusiastically.
Different food.
Same intent.
Nobody hungry eats alone.
Eli's cultivation surged.
[Breakthrough achieved: Steam Meridian I]
[Meridians opened: 12]
[Hearth Flame II]
[Domain Seed acquired: Shared Table]
He nearly collapsed from the rush.
Madam Sato caught him.
"Congratulations. You broke through while holding a spreadsheet. Very modern."
At 9 p.m.:
[Stable Hearth Nodes: 912/1,000]
Then eighty-seven nodes vanished at once.
Eli gasped.
A black wave moved through the city's spiritual map.
Owen's radio exploded with emergency traffic.
Power outages.
Transformer fires.
Transit failures.
Victor had not attacked kitchens.
Someone had attacked the electrical grid feeding them.
Grant stared at the outage map.
"That's not my father."
"How do you know?"
"Because his plan needs the city functioning."
Madam Sato's face went pale.
"Ash Pavilion."
They had waited until both sides built their systems.
Now they intended to starve everyone at once.
The system flashed:
[Urban hunger spike projected: 340%]
[Maw containment: 38% and falling]
Then all downtown lights went dark.
