Chapter 46 - The Morning After the Apocalypse Didn't Happen

Seattle woke tired.
Very tired.
But alive.
News called the night a mass psychological event, a cyberattack, a cult incident, a public-health crisis, and "the weirdest community dinner in American history."
All were partly correct.
Hospitals reported elevated emergency visits but far fewer injuries than worst-case models.
Recovery hotlines stayed busy.
Community kitchens remained open through morning.
People argued online about whether the supernatural was real despite thousands of videos showing impossible things.
One viral comment read: I WATCHED A GRANDMA THROW A FIREBALL AT A DEMON AND I'M STILL UNDECIDED.
Eli woke on a cot in Golden Ox's private dining room.
His system was quiet.
He opened status.
[Name: Eli Chen]
[Class: Free Hearth Cook]
[Realm: Hearth Core... unavailable]
[Current Realm: Steam Meridian II]
He had dropped a realm and a half.
His core was gone.
He waited for disappointment.
Instead he felt strangely light.
His power had not vanished.
It lived in skills.
Knowledge.
Connections.
Thousands of Hearth sparks across the city.
[Distributed Authority retained.]
[Personal combat power reduced.]
[System comment: Try not to solve everything by punching now.]
"I barely punched before."
[Fire extinguisher incident recorded.]
Fair.
Jian slept nearby under three blankets.
Alive.
Medical scans showed organs that had aged seven years in a week but were recovering.
Estimated lifespan no longer displayed.
He was simply a fifty-year-old man with health problems and an angry wife.
Mei sat beside him peeling an apple.
"He wake, I yell. Then soup."
"In that order?"
"Maybe soup first. Need strength for yelling."
Grant entered wearing yesterday's suit.
NourishNow's board had suspended Victor and Grant pending investigations.
"There are federal agents downstairs," Grant said.
Eli groaned.
"For me?"
"For everyone."
"Good."
Grant handed him a folder.
Community donations, merchandise, and emergency grants had created a legitimate nonprofit fund totaling $2.4 million.
Eli nearly dropped the apple.
"We need accountants."
"Already hired."
"Lawyers."
"Three."
"Please tell me none are spiritual."
"One is."
Acceptable.
Then Dana Ruiz entered with another folder.
"Your temporary food permit expired at midnight."
Eli stared.
After everything, this was how he died.
Dana smiled slightly.
"I brought the permanent application."
He hugged her.
She tolerated it for exactly one second.
The morning felt like an ending.
Then Owen arrived holding Luis Mendoza's recovered phone.
"You need to see this."
Luis had recorded a video inside the warehouse before his death.
In the background were shipping manifests.
Not Seattle addresses.
Portland.
Vancouver.
San Francisco.
Denver.
Chicago.
Dozens of cities.
Each with a code beside it.
HOLLOW RESERVOIR STATUS.
Eli stared.
Seattle was not unique.
It was one node in a continental system.
And several reservoirs were marked CRITICAL.
