Chapter 16 - A Meal Made From Memory

Eli had cooked with cheap ingredients.
He had cooked with borrowed equipment.
He had cooked for grief.
He had never cooked a memory.
The Ledger opened a hidden recipe interface.
[Memory Meal]
[Purpose: Anchor corrupted spirit through emotionally truthful sensory pattern.]
[Required: Food connected to target's stable identity.]
Eli knew immediately.
Beef noodle soup.
Jian made it every Lunar New Year, even in the worst years when beef was too expensive and he stretched one pound across an entire stockpot.
"Ingredients?" Reggie asked.
They were standing in a school-lunch warehouse surrounded by chicken nuggets.
Owen checked the loading inventory.
"There's beef stew meat for next week's program."
Tasha found noodles.
Madam Sato found star anise in a confiscated Ash Pavilion pouch and looked personally offended by its quality.
Eli cooked on an industrial burner while his father sat chained to a forklift because nobody had a better idea.
"This is humiliating," Jian muttered.
"You have monster voice. You don't get opinions."
The Maw whispered through him.
MORE.
Reggie tightened the chain.
"Rude stomach ghost."
Eli browned beef, caramelized ginger, crushed garlic, toasted spice. The smell changed the warehouse.
It changed him too.
He remembered sitting on a milk crate at age eight watching Jian cook.
Remembered being twelve and pretending homemade noodles were embarrassing because his classmates ate pizza.
Remembered sixteen, angry at his father for working every holiday.
Remembered the morning Jian vanished.
The soup carried all of it.
Not nostalgia alone.
Love mixed with resentment. Admiration mixed with abandonment.
Truth.
[Intent breakthrough.]
[Kitchen Intent: 14 -> 28]
[Skill unlocked: Memory Seasoning]
Eli served one bowl.
Jian took the first sip.
The black eye flickered.
He cried before the second.
"Too much soy," Jian whispered.
Eli laughed through his own tears.
"You're possessed and still criticizing me."
"I'm your father."
The black fire receded.
[Living Keystone corruption: 23% -> 9%]
Everyone exhaled.
Then Jian looked at the soup and went still.
"Where did you get this star anise?"
Madam Sato held up the Ash Pavilion pouch.
"From them. Why?"
Jian smelled it.
His face changed.
"This isn't Ash Pavilion spice."
He crushed one pod.
A tiny gold filament glowed inside.
"Nine Banquet preservation technique."
Sato frowned. "Cho?"
Jian shook his head.
"Older."
He looked at Grant.
Grant slowly backed away.
"What?"
Jian whispered, "This batch came from the original Hearth stores. Only one person still has access."
Eli felt the reader engine turn again.
They had blamed exiles.
Then found consortium involvement.
Now the ingredient trail pointed above Elder Cho.
Madam Sato said the name reluctantly.
"Grand Steward Vale."
Grant's father.
Grant closed his eyes.
"I was hoping you wouldn't figure that out yet."
