Chapter 29 - We Fed the Monster Something Else

The Maw reached through Jian.

His shadow expanded into a mouth across the floor.

Victor attacked it with Sovereign chains.

Ren attacked Victor.

Madam Sato recovered her qi and attacked everybody who deserved it.

The underground dining room became theological violence.

Eli's system offered one suggestion.

[Run.]

"No."

[Reasonable recommendation remains available.]

The Maw was not simply hungry for food.

It fed on unsatisfied appetite: greed, loneliness, status, addiction, desperation.

Trying to fill it with Hunger Qi made it larger.

Trying to starve it made it violent.

Eli thought of Owen's grief.

You did not cook to solve grief.

You cooked so grief did not sit alone.

"Dad! Let it through a little."

Jian's normal eye widened.

"Terrible idea."

"Family tradition."

Jian loosened containment.

A piece of the Maw entered Eli's Balanced Hearth.

Pain erased language.

He tasted the city's wanting.

Millions of desires.

Promotion.

Dinner.

Love.

A thinner body.

A bigger house.

One more drink.

One apology.

One person to come home.

The Maw had been drowning in humanity's unfinished needs for generations.

Eli could not satisfy them.

Nobody could.

So he did something else.

He opened the Shared Table Domain.

Not to feed the Maw.

To let it experience what happened after hunger was acknowledged.

Across the distributed network, people were still sharing food during the blackout.

Conversation.

Laughter.

Arguments.

Someone washing dishes while another packed leftovers.

The Maw tasted enoughness—not permanent satisfaction, not the end of desire, just moments where wanting did not rule everything.

It recoiled.

Then quieted.

[Urban Hollow behavior altered.]

[New state: Listening]

Victor stopped mid-attack.

"You cannot negotiate with appetite."

Eli gasped. "Maybe because you never listen to it."

Ren stared at the shadow.

His entire philosophy assumed hunger had to be faced without systems.

Victor's assumed hunger had to be controlled.

Eli's answer was neither.

Hunger had to be heard, fed when appropriate, endured when not, and shared when possible.

Messy.

Human.

The Maw withdrew from Jian.

Containment stabilized at 62% without central harvest.

Everyone stared at the readings.

For one glorious second, Eli thought they had solved it.

Then the Ledger flashed.

[System Audit threshold reached early due to conceptual breakthrough.]

[Audit initiated.]

The rice cooker symbol turned red.

[Question 1: Does Heavenly Kitchen Ledger encourage dependency by rewarding moral behavior?]

Eli blinked.

"Now?"

[Yes.]

Victor laughed.

Ren laughed harder.

The system continued.

[If answer is YES, System must reduce or terminate reward functions.]

Eli had stabilized a monster.

Now his own power source was asking whether it should delete itself.
