Chapter 42 - Seattle Said Yes, No, and Are You Insane?

Public reaction was not inspiring unity.
It was public reaction.
Some people volunteered immediately.
Some called Eli a fraud.
A radio host claimed the Maw was a government appetite weapon.
Someone launched a cryptocurrency called $HUNGRY within nineteen minutes.
The system displayed:
[Humanity functioning within expected parameters.]
News helicopters circled Hearth sites.
One protest group gathered outside a community kitchen yelling DON'T PUT DEMONS IN OUR SOUP.
Eli walked outside with a bowl.
"We're not putting demons in soup."
A protester pointed at the Ladle.
"Then what's that?"
"Complicated spoon."
That answer did not help.
More importantly, people were allowed to refuse.
Several Hearth nodes voted not to participate in debt return while continuing to provide food and support.
The Ledger counted them as valid network nodes anyway.
[Consent integrity increased.]
Eli smiled.
A system where "no" strengthened the network was harder to exploit.
Victor's model could not understand that.
His Sovereign Authority grew weaker every time a restaurant publicly revoked hidden NourishNow covenants.
Dana's office released contract templates for businesses to opt out.
Lawyers volunteered.
One class-action attorney appeared on television smiling with the terrifying joy of a shark discovering a buffet.
Grant's company was about to have a bad fiscal quarter.
They still needed Grant himself.
Owen led the rescue at Jade Table.
Eli went with him because Victor's domain had weakened as covenants disappeared.
The restaurant was half-empty.
Staff had walked out after learning what hidden agreements did.
Roland Pike had posted evidence publicly, perhaps from guilt, perhaps because he sensed which side history would punch.
Victor waited in the private chamber.
Grant was no longer tied up.
He stood beside his father.
Eli stopped.
"Grant?"
Grant did not meet his eyes.
Victor smiled.
"He understands responsibility."
Grant had agreed to inherit Sovereign Authority.
At least, that was what it looked like.
Victor placed a golden seal in his son's hand.
"Accept."
Grant closed his fingers around it.
The domain surged.
Then Grant said, "I revoke consent."
The seal shattered.
Victor's face went blank.
Grant looked at him.
"You built the entire system around contracts and never imagined your own son would read one."
Eli grinned.
Satisfying did not begin to cover it.
Victor attacked.
Without full Sovereign Authority, he was still terrifying.
Gold chains filled the room.
Eli opened Shared Table Domain.
Grant revoked every corporate covenant he had authority to terminate.
NourishNow contracts across the city flickered.
Employees saw hidden spiritual clauses for the first time.
Thousands rejected them.
Victor's chains weakened in real time.
"You are destroying thirty years of infrastructure!" he shouted.
Grant answered, "Then we build better infrastructure."
Eli cut the final chain with Knife Intent.
Victor fell to one knee.
Not defeated completely.
But no longer sovereign.
Then the floor shook.
Ren had severed the first primary Hearth conduit.
Every light in Jade Table went black.
The Maw screamed beneath the city.
The public network timer read:
[Debt dissolution completion: 2h 21m]
[Containment failure: 1h 46m]
They had won against Victor.
And lost thirty-five minutes they could not afford.
