Chapter 24 - The Thing My Mother Ate
Twenty-three years earlier, Mei had been dying.
Not metaphorically.
Her kidneys were failing. She had no insurance. Jian was a broke kitchen apprentice with more pride than sense.
He found a forbidden ingredient on the black market.
Hollow Pearl.
Condensed essence from a young hunger entity.
"You fed Mom monster?" Eli asked.
Jian winced.
"When you say it like that—"
"How else would I say it?"
Mei interrupted. "It saved me."
The Pearl rebuilt her damaged organs.
But Hollow essence never disappeared completely.
Years later, when Eli was born, part of it passed to him.
The system opened a hidden status panel.
[Bloodline Trait: Hollow Digestion — dormant]
[Effect: Host can metabolize corrupted Hunger Qi without immediate degradation.]
Eli stared.
"That's why I can purify seals."
Jian nodded.
"Most Hearth cultivators burn Hunger Qi away. You can eat the structure and convert part of it."
"I don't like that verb."
"Neither did I."
Worse: Victor knew.
Jian's willingness to become Living Keystone had partly been a bargain to keep Nine Banquet from recruiting Eli as a child.
Eli laughed without humor.
"So everybody has been protecting me by lying to me."
Mei said, "Yes. Bad plan. We know now."
The Ledger updated.
[Hidden class path available: Hollow Chef]
[Potential: Extreme]
[Risk: Also extreme]
[Accept?]
Eli rejected it immediately.
A second option appeared.
[Alternative path: Balanced Hearth]
[Requirement: Refine Hunger Qi only when paired with equal or greater Gratitude Qi.]
[Slower growth. Lower corruption.]
He chose Balanced Hearth.
[Class evolution initiated.]
[Ember Body -> Balanced Hearth Disciple]
[New resource display unlocked: Gratitude / Hunger ratio]
Current ratio: 3.7 / 1.
Good.
Then the Ash prisoner smiled.
"You think choice matters?"
He bit down on something hidden in his tooth.
Black qi exploded from his mouth.
Eli moved instinctively.
He inhaled.
The Hunger Qi entered him.
Everybody screamed his name.
For one second the world became delicious.
Not food.
Need.
He could taste every desire nearby.
Reggie's fear of losing his garage.
Tasha's hunger to prove herself.
Owen's desire for revenge.
Mei's wish to keep her family together.
The power was intoxicating.
Then Gratitude Qi from the network surged through Eli and balanced it.
[Hunger Qi refined safely.]
[Balanced Hearth ratio: 4.1 / 1]
[Breakthrough: Steam Meridian II]
The prisoner stared.
"Impossible."
Eli wiped black smoke from his mouth.
"Honestly, I agree."
The system added a warning.
[First successful Hollow digestion detected.]
[The Maw has noticed host.]
Deep beneath Seattle, something opened an eye.
And Eli heard a voice inside his own stomach.
