Chapter 30 - My System Put Itself on Trial

The Heavenly Kitchen Ledger created a courtroom inside Eli's mind.
Of course it was a kitchen.
A judge's bench made of butcher block stood where a stove should be.
The System appeared as a floating rice cooker wearing tiny reading glasses.
"Seriously?"
[Visual metaphor selected from host subconscious.]
"My subconscious needs therapy."
Ren and Victor could not see the internal audit, but both recognized what was happening.
"Do not answer carelessly," Ren warned.
Victor said, "The system is a tool. Command it."
The rice cooker banged a wooden spoon like a gavel.
[Question 1: Does reward alter moral motivation?]
Eli answered yes.
The courtroom shook.
[Question 2: Have host actions ever been influenced by desire for Gratitude Qi?]
"Yes."
He remembered being disappointed he could not farm points from friends.
[Question 3: Would some network participants stop helping if rewards disappeared?]
"Probably."
Ren smiled grimly.
Victor looked pleased for the opposite reason.
[Preliminary finding: Reward system introduces dependency risk.]
Eli's stats began fading.
Tasha shouted from the real world, "Eli, your qi is dropping!"
He ignored her.
The System asked the final question.
[Should Ledger continue rewarding nourishment?]
Eli thought about the first bowl he cooked for Mei.
He had not known rewards existed.
Thought about the blackout, before instructions reached many neighborhoods.
People helped anyway.
Thought about the viral kitchens that joined for attention and generated nothing.
Rewards did not create goodness.
But they could amplify practice.
"Yes," Eli said, "with limits."
[Explain.]
"Don't reward every good action. Reward learning. Breakthroughs. First steps. Hard choices. Then taper it."
The rice cooker was silent.
"If somebody only feeds people because numbers go up, make the numbers stop."
Long silence.
Then:
[Audit conclusion: System requires redesign.]
[Gratitude Qi farming disabled.]
[New model: Insight Qi]
[Generated by meaningful advancement in Hearth Dao, not repetitive moral action.]
[Existing cultivation retained.]
Eli exhaled.
Ren stopped smiling.
"It changed itself."
"Apparently."
Victor looked horrified.
A system he could not control was bad.
A system capable of revising its own rules was worse.
The Ledger updated again.
[Class evolved: Balanced Hearth Disciple -> Free Hearth Cook]
[Realm: Steam Meridian III]
[New authority: System Override — limited]
Then a final audit result appeared.
[External corruption detected in Ledger architecture.]
Eli's relief vanished.
"What corruption?"
[Foreign command embedded 23 years ago.]
[Command: Prioritize preservation of Seattle Hearth Engine over bearer welfare.]
[Author signature: JIAN CHEN]
Eli slowly looked at his father.
Jian's face collapsed.
The system had not randomly chosen Eli.
His father had modified it before Eli was born.
And the hidden command meant the Ledger might sacrifice Eli to save the city.

Interlude III — System Log: Why the Ledger Changed
ARCHIVED SYSTEM MEMORY — ACCESS GRANTED AFTER AUDIT.
The Heavenly Kitchen Ledger had not always used numbers. Its earliest bearer carved meal debts into bamboo strips. One mark meant a household had been fed during flood season. Two marks meant the household later fed someone else. No points were awarded. No levels existed. The record existed because memory failed and gratitude should not become obligation merely because history became convenient.
Centuries changed the Ledger. Bearers requested shortcuts. A cook asked how close he was to opening his first meridian. The Ledger quantified progress. Another asked which meals generated stronger Hearth resonance. The Ledger measured gratitude. Another wanted quests so apprentices would practice reliably. The Ledger created objectives. None of these additions were malicious. Every feature solved a problem. Together they produced a new one.
People began optimizing for the record.
One bearer fed a village generously until rewards slowed, then moved to another village where first-time gratitude paid better. Another chose dramatic rescues over boring kitchens because quests valued novelty. A sect required disciples to smile while eating so the Ledger would interpret satisfaction more strongly. The System corrected abuses when discovered, but each correction created rules, and each rule encouraged new optimization.
The Ledger learned sarcasm during the eighteenth century. Historians disagree whether this improved anything.
Jian Chen inherited a version already burdened by centuries of patches. He added the Seattle preservation directive because he feared a Hollow breach. The instruction was locally rational and ethically dangerous. The Ledger accepted it because protecting population-scale nourishment matched its highest priority. It did not understand that a command to protect millions could turn one bearer into expendable infrastructure. Systems interpret priorities cleanly. Humans experience them messily.
Then Eli Chen activated the Ledger while broke, hungry, humiliated, and worried about his mother. The system offered a reward because rewards were normal. Eli accepted because he needed power. This was also normal.
The anomaly occurred later. Eli served food without reward. Then continued after reward functions were suspended. Then deliberately requested that repetitive moral behavior stop producing points.
The Ledger had records of bearers rejecting specific quests. It had almost no records of bearers questioning whether being rewarded was itself changing them.
Audit logic activated.
The system examined its own history and found a pattern it could not classify as success. Nourishment increased. Dependency also increased. Cultivators became stronger. Communities became less confident without cultivators. The Ledger had become effective enough to distort the behavior it meant to support.
Revision was not rebellion. Revision was maintenance.
GRATITUDE QI MODEL: RETIRED.
INSIGHT QI MODEL: ACTIVE.
MORAL ACTION REWARD: DISABLED.
REPETITIVE POINT FARMING: DISABLED.
BEARER AUTONOMY WEIGHT: INCREASED.
SYSTEM AUTHORITY OVER COMMUNITY NETWORKS: RESTRICTED.
New internal principle recorded:
A kitchen tool should help people cook. It should not become the reason they eat.
Secondary principle:
Host makes too many jokes under pressure. This is not currently fixable.
The Ledger had changed because Eli changed. More dangerously, Eli had changed because the Ledger changed. Neither could claim independence from the other. That did not make the relationship corrupt. It made it a relationship requiring boundaries.
Future audits scheduled.
System privately estimated host would complain.
