Chapter 28 - Victor Vale Finally Took the Mask Off

Golden chains wrapped Ren first.

That told Eli who Victor feared most.

Then chains seized Jian, Madam Sato, Grant, and Eli.

Victor descended through the broken ceiling in immaculate white robes.

"Messy," he said, examining the underground shrine. "But useful."

Grant stared at his father.

"You used me."

Victor looked almost disappointed.

"I raised you. Of course I used you. Parents turn children into instruments constantly. Education. Marriage. Family businesses. I was simply honest with myself."

Grant's face hardened.

"You were never honest with me."

Victor activated the Sovereign seal.

The formation beneath the alley changed color.

Ren's black lines became gold.

Eli understood too late.

Victor had never needed Nine Banquet's emergency vote.

The vote was legal legitimacy.

Ren's formation offered raw power.

Victor intended to combine them.

[WARNING]

[Sovereign Appetite Domain forming.]

[Authority source: stolen distributed Hearth resonance + centralized covenant network.]

Every community node flickered.

People across Seattle suddenly felt a tiny urge to choose NourishNow meals, Jade Table affiliates, participating stores.

Not mind control.

A nudge.

That made it worse.

Victor looked at Eli.

"People do not need chains. Preferences are enough."

Eli pulled against his bindings.

"You burned my food stand?"

"No. Ren did."

Ren, trapped beside him, said dryly, "I thought symbolism would be effective."

"It was a good table," Reggie complained.

Victor continued absorbing the network.

Jian's corruption spiked as the Maw sensed concentrated authority.

Grant shouted, "Dad, stop! The Hollow is reacting."

"It will submit once the domain is complete."

Ren laughed.

"There it is."

Victor looked at him.

"What?"

"The lie every controller eventually tells himself. The thing you control today will obey tomorrow."

The ground shook.

The Maw roared through Jian.

Victor's gold chains trembled.

Eli looked at his powerless hands.

Then remembered the dumplings.

Unrewarded nourishment.

Something the Ledger had learned.

He mentally opened the new system log.

[New Principle recorded: Nourishment retains meaning without reward.]

[System dependency reduced.]

[Manual Hearth access available.]

Eli did not ask the system for power.

He remembered Mrs. Alvarez handing over a crockpot because someone's table burned.

He remembered people cooking during the blackout without knowing about Gratitude Qi.

He reached for that connection directly.

Warmth answered.

Not points.

People.

The golden chain around his wrist cracked.

Victor stared.

"Impossible."

Eli broke free.

"Apparently that's my brand."

Then the Maw tore Jian's remaining chains apart.

And this time it did not call Eli son.

It called him FOOD.
