Chapter 27 - The Alley Became a Boss Fight

They evacuated the alley by announcing a gas leak.
This was technically untrue.
Owen argued that "ancient starvation formation under sidewalk" would create more paperwork.
Dana Ruiz agreed.
Beneath the first Hearth node, they found a sealed brick stairway descending farther than the building foundations.
Ren had built a shrine around the exact place community resonance concentrated.
"Why here?" Tasha asked.
Eli knew.
"Because inversion works best where trust is strongest."
That was Ren's point.
Any system built on connection created a place where betrayal could hurt more.
At the shrine center stood a stone dining table set for eight.
Seven seats were empty.
Ren occupied the eighth.
He looked ordinary.
Gray sweater. Reading glasses. Calm hands.
A chef who might complain politely about parking.
His cultivation pressure made Eli's teeth ache.
[APPRAISAL]
[Ren Chen]
[Realm: Empty Core]
[Path: Fasting Dao]
[Threat: Catastrophic]
Ren poured tea.
"Sit."
Madam Sato attacked.
Ren tapped the table.
Her qi vanished.
She crashed into a chair like an ordinary sixty-year-old woman.
"My domain suppresses culinary cultivation," Ren explained. "No flame. No enhanced bodies. No systems."
Eli's Ledger went dark.
For the first time since the rice cooker awakened, there were no notifications.
No stats.
No helpful sarcasm.
Just him.
Ren smiled.
"Scary, isn't it?"
Eli hated that it was.
"You think the system made you strong. So prove you exist without it."
Ren placed eight bowls on the table.
"Cook me one dish. No qi. No skills. No supernatural ingredients. If I am satisfied, I deactivate this point."
Tasha whispered, "This is a trap."
"Obviously," Eli said.
But it was also the only fight they could survive.
Ren's pantry contained basic ingredients.
Eli chose dumplings.
Jian laughed softly.
"Of course."
Ren's perfect dumplings had haunted Jian for decades.
Eli made ugly ones.
His folds varied. Two leaked. One looked like a sea creature.
Without Knife Intent, his chopping was merely decent.
Without Hearth Flame, the burner was just gas.
But Mei stood beside him and corrected his dough.
Jian mixed filling.
Tasha stole one and was slapped away.
Reggie made dipping sauce with alarming amounts of vinegar.
They cooked as a family and friends.
No points.
No reward.
Ren ate one.
His face did not change.
He ate another.
Then a third.
"Your folds are terrible," he said.
Jian grinned. "I know."
Ren looked at his brother.
Something broke behind his eyes.
The formation flickered.
The Ledger came back online.
[Unrewarded nourishment detected.]
[System learning event.]
Ren stared at Eli.
For the first time, the Empty Chef looked uncertain.
Then Victor Vale's voice boomed from above.
"Thank you for gathering everyone in one place."
Golden chains crashed through the ceiling.
Victor had waited for Ren to suppress their cultivation.
Now he intended to capture both sides.
