Chapter 43 - The City Started Craving at Once

The first wave hit at 9:47 p.m.

Seattle got hungry.

Not normal hunger.

Old hunger.

A man who had quit gambling twelve years ago suddenly drove toward a casino before pulling over and calling his sponsor.

Thousands craved cigarettes.

Others wanted food, alcohol, shopping, attention, sex, approval, revenge, control.

Stored debt was leaking faster than the network could process it.

Emergency rooms filled—not mainly with injuries, but panic.

Eli felt every spike through Shared Table.

His knees buckled.

[Network load: 163%]

[Host should disconnect to prevent core damage.]

"No."

[Host has a concerning relationship with this word.]

He could not personally absorb the city.

That would repeat Jian's mistake.

So he delegated.

Madam Sato took the north network.

Tasha took youth and school sites, assisted by actual adults because she was still seventeen and deeply offended by that reminder.

Owen coordinated emergency services.

Grant opened NourishNow warehouses and released every uncontaminated meal without charge.

Reggie somehow became logistics director despite once labeling a plan "Enter, Find, Steal, Leave."

"Growth," he said proudly.

Mei stayed at the original alley node with a frying pan nobody questioned.

The People's Ladle multiplied functionally through covenant anchors. Not physical copies—permissions. Each trusted node leader could distribute tiny measured portions of debt.

[Community Hearth processing rate increased: 240%]

People suffered.

But they suffered with support.

That distinction changed everything.

The city did not become violent at the scale Victor predicted.

There were incidents. Fights. Relapses. Shoplifting. Terrible decisions.

There were also neighbors taking car keys away from friends, stores voluntarily limiting alcohol sales, recovery groups opening overnight, families sitting together through urges that had no obvious source.

No magical utopia.

Just thousands of imperfect interventions.

Eli found a man outside Golden Ox Prime trying to break a window for food.

The man was crying.

"I don't know why I'm this hungry."

Eli opened the restaurant kitchen.

Roland Pike stood inside.

For a second they stared at each other.

Then Roland handed Eli an apron.

"We have three hundred pounds of food."

Eli tied it on.

The dishwashers, cooks, servers and managers fed whoever arrived.

No checks.

No $140 steak plates.

Just soup, rice, roasted vegetables, bread.

Roland watched Eli portion dumplings.

"Those are company property," he said.

Eli looked at him.

Roland almost smiled.

"Take as many as you want."

Full circle was apparently seasoned with petty satisfaction.

The network timer dropped.

[Dissolution: 1h 09m]

[Containment: 52m]

Still losing.

Then the Maw connection pulled Eli downward.

Not physically.

Spiritually.

He fell through darkness into the Hollow's interior.

For the first time he saw its core.

A tiny wooden bowl floated inside the endless mouth.

The bowl was cracked.

On its bottom was the original Nine Banquet seal.

And one sentence carved in old Chinese characters.

WE PROMISE TO HOLD WHAT YOU CANNOT.

Eli understood.

The Maw had not begun as a prison.

It began as a promise.
