Chapter 10 - Room 1313

The insurance company insisted the Aurora Crown was the only partner hotel with vacancies.

Mason requested literally anywhere else.

They offered a parking garage.

So he took the room.

1313.

"Subtle," he muttered.

Inside, the suite was too nice for a former dishwasher.

Free minibar.

City view.

A fruit plate that probably cost more than his shoes.

On the pillow sat a red envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

LOU STOLE FROM THE NINE HOUSES. RETURN THE LEDGER.

Thread Sight revealed nine different colors of fortune woven into the paper.

Nine Houses.

Nine factions.

Mason touched the Bankrupt Immortal's Chip.

He paid.

The room disappeared.

A vision replaced it.

Lou Avery, thirty years younger, stood at the same window wearing a white suit.

Nine men and women bowed to him.

One called him "Fortune King."

Then the vision shifted.

Lou broke a golden wheel with his bare hands.

Thousands of silver threads escaped into the city.

He laughed.

"Luck belongs to people who live it. Not people who own the building."

The vision ended.

Mason's chest burned.

Before he could celebrate, the hotel room door opened.

A woman in a dealer's uniform entered using a master key.

Ivy Chen froze when she saw him.

Mason froze when he saw the knife in her hand.

She looked at the red envelope.

Then at him.

"If you're reading that," she said, "we have about thirty seconds before the room explodes."
