Chapter 33 - Victor Mercer Was Lou's Disciple
Victor asked Mason to meet privately after the auction.
Ivy said no.
Tasha said absolutely no.
Raymond said no while already ordering room service on Victor's account.
Mason went anyway.
Victor revealed the truth.
He and Lou had cultivated together forty years ago.
They wanted to destroy the Nine Houses.
Then Victor's wife became sick from a fate backlash.
The Houses offered treatment in exchange for loyalty.
Victor accepted.
Lou never forgave him.
"So you became exactly what you hated," Mason said.
Victor looked tired.
"Yes."
Blake entered unexpectedly.
"Father, why are you talking to him?"
Victor's face hardened.
"Leave."
Blake looked at Mason with pure hatred.
Mason almost enjoyed it.
Almost.
Then Thread Sight showed a black chain around Blake's heart.
Not Mercer fortune.
Something older.
Someone else had been feeding on him too.
Mason pointed.
"Who owns your son?"
Victor went still.
Blake laughed nervously. "What?"
The Ledger identified the chain.
[HEAVENLY CLEARINGHOUSE CENTRAL CLAIM.]
Victor's face collapsed.
The Nine Houses were not the top of the system.
They were clients.
Mason stared at the chain disappearing east across the country.
Eight regional nodes.
One central owner.
The path had just gotten much bigger.
