Chapter 23 - The Billionaire Offered Him a Job
Victor Mercer offered Mason ten million dollars.
The arena went silent.
Mason almost said yes on reflex.
Ten million was enough to make poverty feel like somebody else's childhood.
Victor continued.
"Join House Mercer. Return the stolen claim. Surrender Lou's Ledger for study."
There it was.
The price.
Mason looked at Tasha.
At Ivy.
At Blake, who seemed personally offended that his father valued Mason more than him.
"Can I negotiate?" Mason asked.
Victor smiled. "Of course."
"Twenty million, Blake apologizes to every kitchen worker he ever screwed over, and you stop draining luck from people who never agreed to it."
Victor's smile vanished.
"No."
"Then neither can I."
The Ledger chimed.
[DEFIANCE AGAINST LIFE-CHANGING BRIBE.]
[FORTUNE +50.]
Tasha whispered, "I support your principles, but I need a minute to mourn the money."
Victor sat down.
The second trial began immediately.
Mason's opponent was not a fighter.
It was a contract.
A thousand-page living document wrapped around him like a paper serpent.
[TRIAL TWO: ESCAPE BINDING COVENANT.]
Every page offered him something.
Money.
Power.
Safety.
One page offered his father alive again.
Mason froze.
The contract whispered in his father's voice.
"Sign, son."
His hand moved toward the line.
