Chapter 35 - The Auditor Wore a Business Suit

Heaven's auditor arrived in a black sedan.

Mason found that disappointing.

He had expected clouds.

The man introduced himself as Mr. Pell.

Gray suit.

Gray tie.

Gray eyes.

No visible qi.

Thread Sight could not see his fortune at all.

"Mason Reed," Pell said. "Your Golden Wheel was formed without remittance."

"I don't know what that means."

"You owe twenty percent of breakthrough yield."

"To Heaven?"

"To authorized representatives."

Mason smiled. "So not Heaven."

Pell's expression did not change.

He handed Mason an invoice.

Amount due: 18 years of future fortune.

Tasha looked over his shoulder.

"Can we dispute the charge?"

Pell looked at her. "No."

"Then this is definitely finance."

Mason used Karmic Appraisal on the invoice.

The paper screamed.

Not metaphorically.

A human scream came from inside it.

Thousands of names appeared in tiny print.

People whose future fortune had been seized to pay similar debts.

Mason tore the invoice in half.

Pell finally smiled.

"Good."

Everyone froze.

Pell leaned closer.

"I hoped Lou's successor would be difficult."

He placed a white card in Mason's hand.

On it was an address in Chicago.

"If you want the Central Clearinghouse," Pell said, "start there."

Then he disappeared.

Raymond whispered, "That was either very good or very bad."

Mason looked at the card.

"Usually both."
