Chapter 9 - The Curse Paid Rent
The black chip followed Mason home.
He tried leaving it in Tasha's car.
It appeared in his shoe.
He threw it into a dumpster.
It appeared in his cereal bowl.
Tasha watched him remove it from the milk.
"I hate magic."
"You've known about magic for two days."
"It has been a bad two days."
The Ledger identified the curse.
[MISFORTUNE MARK: ATTRACTS MINOR DISASTERS UNTIL USER LOSES $5,000 IN VALUE.]
Mason laughed.
"Joke's on it. I don't own five thousand dollars."
[CURSE WILL ACCEPT FUTURE VALUE.]
"Rude."
Then his landlord knocked.
Mason braced for eviction.
Instead, the landlord announced a plumbing leak had ruined Mason's apartment and the building's insurance owed him temporary housing plus compensation.
Mason blinked.
"How much?"
"Five thousand two hundred."
The black chip cracked in half.
[CURSE SATISFIED.]
[NET GAIN AFTER LOSS EVENT: $200.]
[FORTUNE RECLAIMED: +8.]
Tasha stared.
"You got cursed into paying rent."
Mason looked at the ruined ceiling.
"I may be the first person in Vegas to profit from black mold."
The Ledger chimed.
[HIDDEN PROPERTY UNLOCKED: CURSE CONVERSION.]
[USER MAY CONVERT LIMITED MISFORTUNE INTO CULTIVATION RESOURCES.]
Then Mason's temporary hotel key arrived by text.
Aurora Crown Casino Resort.
He stared at it.
Tasha said, "That's not suspicious at all."
