Chapter 20 - Cultivator Court Was Worse Than Regular Court

The subpoena summoned Mason to the Nevada Tribunal of Fortunate Persons.

It met beneath a luxury tax office.

Naturally.

The judge wore a gray suit and floated six inches above his chair.

House Mercer accused Mason of theft.

Mason stared at Blake's attorney.

"You stole my luck for twenty-four years."

The attorney smiled. "Your parents signed a hardship covenant."

A contract appeared.

Mason recognized his father's signature.

His anger faltered.

Then Ivy leaned close.

"Read the date."

The contract was signed three months after Mason's father died.

Mason looked at the judge.

"That's forged."

The courtroom murmured.

Blake's attorney stopped smiling.

Thread Sight revealed black fortune leaking from the document.

Mason used Debt-Cutting Palm.

The paper split.

A hidden clause appeared beneath the ink.

REGISTER SOURCE LINE IN PERPETUITY.

The judge's eyes narrowed.

Forgery was not illegal to the Nine Houses.

Getting caught with one apparently was.

The Mercer claim was suspended pending review.

Mason expected victory.

Instead the judge pointed at Lou's token.

"Unregistered cultivation artifact."

He declared Mason an illegal fortune cultivator.

Sentence: surrender the Ledger or enter the Tribunal Trials.

"What are the trials?" Mason asked.

Blake smiled from across the room.

"Three days of sanctioned combat."

Mason checked his status.

Combat skill: Dishwasher Fist.

He sighed.

"Do I get a public defender?"
