Chapter 46 - The System Had Been Hiding Something

Mason felt betrayed by a dead man and a floating interface.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

[QUESTION WAS NOT ASKED.]

"You are unbelievable."

The Ledger had always answered narrowly.

Central exploited that.

The avatar explained that Fate Wells did stabilize probability.

Without them, fortune could accumulate unpredictably and cause disasters.

The theft was real.

The need was also real.

That was worse than a simple villain.

Mason asked a better question.

"Does stabilization require private ownership by the Nine Houses?"

The room went silent.

The Ledger answered.

[NO.]

Central's avatar stopped smiling.

Mason continued.

"Does it require involuntary harvesting?"

[NO.]

"Can the system operate through voluntary distributed contributions?"

Long pause.

[YES.]

Tasha slapped the table.

"There it is."

Central rose.

"Distributed fate management was abandoned because humans are unreliable."

Mason looked around the room.

"You built a dictatorship because paperwork was hard."

Pell looked almost proud.

Central's calm finally cracked.

The settlement realm shook.

[HOSTILE RESTRUCTURING DETECTED.]

The avatar pointed at Mason.

"Then prove your model."

Every remaining regional Fate Well disconnected from Central at once.

Across America, probability began to destabilize.

Mason had one hour to replace the system he had spent weeks attacking.
