Chapter 4 - He Ran From Security and Leveled Up
Mason did what any newly awakened cultivator with one meridian and no combat skills would do.
He ran.
Fast.
One guard reached for him.
Odds Sight flashed.
A silver line led left.
Mason jumped left.
A delivery cart rolled between them at exactly the right second.
The guard crashed into forty pounds of bottled water.
[FORTUNE RECLAIMED FROM RIGGED ENCOUNTER: +2]
The second guard cut him off near the employee parking structure.
Mason saw three possible routes.
Two glowed red.
The third went straight up a concrete stairwell.
He took it.
On level four, he found Tasha leaning against her car eating cereal from a paper cup.
She stared at him.
"Didn't you get fired?"
"I got promoted to hunted."
A guard burst through the stairwell door.
Tasha threw the cereal.
Milk hit the man's face.
He slipped.
Mason kicked the door shut.
"I owe you."
"You owe me seven dollars for the cereal."
They jumped into her car.
As Tasha peeled out, the Ledger chimed.
[ESCAPED HOUSE ENFORCERS WITHOUT INJURING MORTALS.]
[MERIDIAN TEMPERING COMPLETE.]
[NEW SKILL: EMPTY POCKET STEP — MINOR PROBABILITY SHIFT DURING EVASION.]
Mason laughed.
Tasha glanced at him. "Why are you glowing?"
He looked down.
His hands were surrounded by faint copper light.
Then Tasha's rearview mirror cracked by itself.
In the broken reflection, Blake Mercer was sitting in the back seat.
But when Mason turned around, nobody was there.
