Chapter 32 - Mason Bid His Bad Luck Instead
Mason refused to bid another Fortune Year.
He had only recently gotten his luck back.
Giving it away felt like signing another House contract.
So he tried something stupid.
"Can I bid misfortune?"
The auctioneer laughed.
Then the black Bankrupt Immortal's Chip floated from Mason's pocket.
[CURSE CONVERSION ACTIVE.]
[BID ASSET AVAILABLE: 12 ACCUMULATED MISFORTUNE UNITS.]
The auctioneer stopped laughing.
Misfortune was valuable to assassins, curse cultivators, and people who hated their neighbors.
Mason bid all twelve units.
Madam Zero's eyes narrowed.
Victor Mercer offered three Fortune Years.
Mason looked at Ivy.
Her Misfortune Vein pulsed.
She whispered, "I can lend you twenty units."
"Does that hurt you?"
"No. It might actually help."
They combined their bid.
Thirty-two Misfortune Units.
The auction hall's chandeliers flickered.
Nobody raised again.
Mason won Lou's jade die.
The moment he touched it, a memory entered his mind.
Lou sat beside a younger Victor Mercer at a poker table.
They were laughing like brothers.
Then Lou said, "If we ever become the House, promise you'll burn it with me."
Victor answered, "Always."
The memory ended.
Mason stared across the auction hall.
Victor Mercer was watching him.
For the first time, the billionaire looked ashamed.
