Chapter 48 - The Nine Houses Voted
The Nine Houses faced a choice.
Return to Central.
Or join the Common Fortune Network.
House Vale joined first.
Three independent sect coalitions followed.
Victor Mercer stood before his own House.
Blake expected his father to choose Central.
Victor looked at Mason.
Then at the old memory of Lou still displayed from the jade die.
"I broke one promise forty years ago," Victor said. "I won't break it twice."
House Mercer joined.
Four Houses remained with Central.
Enough to keep the war alive.
But not enough to control everyone.
The Tribunal recognized the Common Network as a legal cultivation framework by a vote of five to four.
Mason blinked.
"That's it?"
Pell nodded.
"Revolutions are often disappointingly procedural."
The Ledger rewarded him.
[FORTUNE +500.]
[GOLDEN WHEEL — PEAK STAGE.]
[NEW TITLE: HOUSELESS FOUNDER.]
Mason hated the title less than expected.
Then Central's avatar addressed him privately.
"You won a vote."
"I noticed."
"You did not defeat Heaven."
"You're not Heaven."
The avatar smiled.
"Correct."
For the first time, Mason felt fear.
"Then what is?"
The avatar looked upward.
Every fortune thread in the realm trembled.
"Something the Clearinghouse was built to keep asleep."
