Chapter 16 - They Won by Losing the Warehouse
Mason did not fight forty cultivators.
He set off the warehouse fire sprinklers.
Very heroic.
The water hit stacks of illegally stored spirit batteries.
Ivy saw what he was doing and shouted, "Those react to water!"
"I know now!"
The batteries erupted in green sparks.
Everyone ran.
Madam Zero screamed about inventory.
Tasha stole a forklift.
"Can you drive that?" Mason yelled.
"Define drive!"
She rammed the warehouse doors open.
The three escaped while Madam Zero's people saved millions in cultivation goods.
[ENEMY OBJECTIVE DENIED.]
[RIGGED CAPTURE SCENARIO BROKEN.]
[FORTUNE +19.]
[COPPER MERIDIANS 5/9.]
Mason coughed smoke and laughed.
Ivy stared at the burning warehouse behind them.
"We lost."
"We escaped."
"We destroyed the evidence."
"We destroyed her merchandise."
Tasha leaned out the forklift cab. "Morale victory."
Then Ivy started laughing too.
For one minute, things felt good.
Then the city changed.
Every casino sign on the skyline flashed the same symbol.
Nine circles around a crown.
The Ledger turned red.
[NINE HOUSES EMERGENCY NOTICE.]
[BOUNTY ISSUED: MASON REED — 100,000 SPIRIT CREDITS.]
Tasha looked at him.
"Is that a lot?"
Ivy answered.
"Enough to make every cultivator in Nevada interested."
Mason sighed.
"Can I at least use it as proof of income?"
