Chapter 40 - The Insurance Princess
Celeste Vale was twenty-six, terrifying, and extremely polite.
"Mr. Reed," she said, drawing her sword, "nothing personal."
"That's what insurance always says before denying coverage."
She attacked.
Her technique, Actuarial Blade, assigned probabilities to injuries before they occurred.
Mason's left shoulder suddenly had a 63% chance of being cut.
Then it was cut.
His right knee: 41%.
Pain followed.
Thread Sight could not dodge an outcome already priced into the system.
So Mason used House Edge Reversal.
The next assigned injury turned around.
Celeste's sleeve split instead.
She stopped.
"Interesting."
Then she increased the model.
Mason's death probability rose to 78%.
Ivy stepped into the field.
Her Misfortune Vein injected noise.
The model crashed.
Celeste stared at the floating errors around her sword.
"That's unfair."
Ivy smiled. "Correct."
Mason disarmed Celeste without injuring her.
She expected humiliation.
He handed the sword back.
"Your House is hurting people."
Celeste looked at Pell's evidence.
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
"My father told me those districts naturally produced unstable fate."
"Your father lied."
Celeste lowered her sword.
[ENEMY HEIR DOUBT CREATED.]
[NEW OUTCOME BRANCH UNLOCKED.]
Then House Vale's headquarters exploded in golden light across the city.
Celeste whispered, "He knows I failed."
