Chapter 27 - The City Had a Bad Luck Day

The Clearinghouse retaliated before Mason left the courthouse.

Vegas became unlucky.

Not apocalypse unlucky.

Annoying unlucky.

Coffee machines failed.

ATMs froze.

Shoelaces snapped.

A thousand tourists dropped hotel keys into toilets.

Then the bad luck escalated.

A construction crane stalled over traffic.

A hospital backup generator misfired.

Two passenger planes reported navigation glitches.

Ivy went pale.

"They are compressing fortune from the whole city."

Mason saw it with Thread Sight.

Silver lines were being pulled toward one underground location.

The Clearinghouse node sat beneath an old sports-book data center.

"Can we shut it down?" Tasha asked.

Ivy shook her head. "Not without crashing the stored probability back into the city."

Raymond added, "Imagine pouring ten years of luck into five minutes."

Mason pictured every slot machine hitting jackpot while every ambulance got green lights and every terrible marriage proposal somehow worked.

"Chaotic."

"Very."

The Ledger offered a solution.

[BUILD PERSONAL KARMA VAULT.]

[REQUIREMENTS: SILVER THREAD PEAK; 100 FP; ONE ANCHOR OF GENUINE VALUE.]

Mason had sixty-eight points.

The city did not have time.

So he did the one thing the system rewarded most.

He went hunting for rigged outcomes.

In Las Vegas, that was not difficult.
