Chapter 26 - Lou Owed Heaven Money
Lou's charges were ridiculous.
Illegal redistribution of fortune.
Destruction of private karmic infrastructure.
Operating an unlicensed sect without a mailing address.
And one charge Mason did not understand.
HEAVENLY TAX EVASION.
"Heaven taxes cultivators?" Mason asked.
Raymond nodded solemnly. "Nobody escapes administration."
Lou had refused to pay a portion of every breakthrough to the Nine Houses' Heavenly Clearinghouse.
He believed the tax was fake.
Victor Mercer claimed it was necessary to prevent probability collapse.
Mason asked the Ledger.
[ANSWER COST: 60 FORTUNE.]
He paid.
[HEAVENLY TAX IS NOT HEAVENLY.]
[IT IS A PRIVATE EXTRACTION SYSTEM CREATED 112 YEARS AGO.]
Mason laughed.
The Tribunal did not.
He projected the answer across the courtroom.
Executives began shouting.
Victor Mercer stood so fast his chair shattered.
"That artifact is corrupted!"
The judge looked terrified.
Which told Mason everything.
The Nine Houses' greatest sacred institution was basically an old financial scam with lightning effects.
The Ledger unlocked a new path.
[BOOK ONE OBJECTIVE UPDATED.]
[BREAK THE LAS VEGAS CLEARINGHOUSE NODE.]
[REWARD: GOLDEN WHEEL REALM ACCESS.]
[FAILURE: CITYWIDE FORTUNE SEIZURE.]
Tasha raised her hand from the gallery.
"Question."
The judge blinked.
"What?"
"Is citywide fortune seizure as bad as it sounds?"
Outside, every traffic light in Las Vegas turned red.
