Chapter 18 - Mason Had Been Farmed Since Birth
Raymond traced Mason's fate debt through the Ledger.
The result made the room silent.
Mason's luck had been harvested since infancy.
Small amounts every day.
Enough to change a life.
A scholarship lost by one point.
A car accident that injured his father.
A job interview canceled after the company hired a Mercer cousin.
Dozens of choices bent away from him.
Not because he was cursed.
Because someone had registered his bloodline as a permanent fortune source.
"Who?" Mason asked.
Raymond looked at the signature.
MERCER HOUSE.
Blake's family.
Mason laughed softly.
Tasha looked worried. "That's not your funny laugh."
"No."
For years, Blake had mocked him for being unlucky while his family literally profited from it.
The Ledger flashed.
[PERSONAL DEBT IDENTIFIED.]
[NEW TECHNIQUE AVAILABLE: DEBT-CUTTING PALM.]
[FUNCTION: SEVER ILLEGITIMATE FATE CLAIMS.]
[COST: 40 FORTUNE.]
Mason had thirty-eight.
Tasha pulled two dollars from her pocket.
"Can the universe take cash?"
It could not.
Then Raymond pointed upstairs.
A wedding party was arguing because the groom's ring had vanished.
Mason sighed.
"Again?"
Thread Sight found it inside the animatronic Elvis.
[FORTUNE +2.]
Mason bought the technique.
His right palm turned warm.
A red chain became visible around his wrist.
It stretched across the city toward the Aurora Crown.
Mason smiled.
"I think it's time to cancel a subscription."
